Oldies: O Terco : Creatures of the Night (1976)

O Terço é uma banda brasileira formada no Rio de Janeiro em 1968 por:

 

Jorge Amiden (guitarra)

Sérgio Hinds (baixo)

Vinícius Cantuária (bateria).

 

A banda começou tocando rock clássico, mas logo tendeu ao rock progressivo e ao rock rural e MPB caracterizando o som e a diversidade musical da banda.Segundo o guitarrista Sérgio Hinds (único membro presente em todas as formações da banda), a palavra terço foi escolhida como nome da banda porque é uma medida fracionária que corresponde a três ou a “terça parte de alguma coisa”, como num rosário. O Terço caiu como uma luva devido a primeira formação da banda, que era a de trio (guitarra, baixo, bateria). Inicialmente, o nome escolhido tinha sido “Santíssima Trindade”, mas para evitar atritos com a Igreja Católica, foi adotado “O Terço”.

Foi o ano da gravação do seu terceiro disco, o “Criaturas da Noite”. A capa do disco foi elaborada por Antônio e André Peticov e foi chamada de “A Compreensão”. O disco começa com o pulsante baixo de Magrão, introdução do simples rock “Hey Amigo”, composição de Cezar de Mercês que se tornou um dos maiores clássicos da banda. A influência do rock rural é bastante presente nas faixas “Queimada” e “Jogo das Pedras” (ambas de Flávio Venturini e Cezar de Mercês). A belissíma faixa-título “Criaturas da Noite” (Flávio Venturini / Luiz Carlos Sá), conta com os arranjos de orquestra do maestro Rogério Duprat. O disco traz as instrumentais “Ponto Final” (do baterista Luiz Moreno, que toca piano na introdução da música) e a suíte instrumental “1974″, composta por Flávio Venturini e que fecha com chave de ouro como o maior destaque do disco e já foi eleita a melhor música em todas as enquetes feitas pelos fãs do grupo.

 

Visando mercado internacional, a banda gravou o vocal deste disco em inglês e lançou o “Creatures of the Night”. O disco Criaturas da Noite é até hoje uma das maiores referências entre os discos de rock progressivo nacional e internacional também. Alguns o consideram o maior disco deste gênero no país. O Módulo 1000 foi um grupo de progressivo carioca, formado em 1969, que teve breve duração. O quarteto seguia uma linha pesada com nítidas influências de Black Sabbath e toques de psicodélicos a la Pink Floyd. A banda teve em seu currículo a participação no V Festival Internacional da Canção e o lançamento de um único álbum em 1972, que hoje é um valioso ítem para os negociantes de LPs raros. Na década de 90, um colecionador de discos do Rio de Janeiro comprou os direitos do Módulo 1000 junto a Top Tape e transformou o LP em CD com um número limitado de cópias. O CD saiu pela Zaher Zein/Projeto Luz Eterna. IF foi uma banda inglesa, de rock progressiva, formada em 1969. Uma contribuição da Inglaterrra para o movimento jazz-rock, iniciado nos Estados Unidos pela banda Chicago. O diferente dessa banda foi o destaque dado ao sax, tocado por Dick Morrissey e flauta e sax por Dave Quincy. Terry Smith era o guitarrista. J.W. Hodgkinson, o vocalista.

Bootleg: Yes – Perpetual Change (1971)

Mais um bootleg descoberto pela incrível Luciana Aun do Blog Prog Rock Vintage, do qual sou frequentador assíduo. Segundo a Luciana : “Gravado durante a tour do Yes Album no dia 24 de Julho de 1971. Aqui encontramos faixas do próprio Yes Album, dois singles e um cover executado por Howe da música Classical Gas composta pelo guitarrista americano Mason Williams. Além de Steve Howe, Eric Clapton e Cozy Powel também chegaram a tocá-la.
A linda faixa America originalmente composta por Simon & Garfunkel foi gravada em Berlim no dia 5 de Junho do mesmo ano.Trata-se de um bootleg de excelente qualidade e é sempre muito bom ouvir os registros ao vivo mais antigos do YES.“

Oldies: Babe Ruth – First Base (1972)

Good heavy-progressive from England. As the title indicates, “First Base” was their debut.It’s a quite varied album that ranges from aggressive hard-rock, to jazz-influenced material and to melodic symphonic progressive. Their sound is mostly dominated by guitar and some el-piano. Most of the vocals are sung bytheir female singer Jenny Haan. Bernie Marsden is on guitar, y`all know him from UFO and later Whitesnake. This album is great stuff for anyone into 70′s hard-rocking progressive.

Banda de “heavy-progressivo” da Inglaterra. Como o título indica, “First Base” foi a sua estreia. É um album agradável e bastante variado, vai de um hardrock agressivo,a um material de influência jazzistica até ao um estilo progressivo melódico sinfônico. O seu som é quase todo dominado pela guitarra e algum piano. A maior parte dos vocais é feita por sua vocalista Jenny Haan. Bernie Marsden é o guitarrista, conhecido do UFO e mais tarde no Whitesnake. Este album é um grande achado para quem gosta do estilo rock progressivo dos anos 70. É dele o mega sucesso “The Mexican”

Be-Bop Deluxe were an English progressive rock band who achieved critical acclaim and moderate commercial success during the mid to late 1970′s.

The original Be-Bop Deluxe line-up was as follows:

Oldies: Vytas Brenner : Hermanos (1974)

Vytas Brenner (September 19, 1946 – March 18, 2004) was a Venezuelan musician, keyboardist, guitarist and composer.

He was born in Tübingen, Germany. Like many Europeans on the wake of World War II, his family migrated to Venezuela in 1949 when he was 2 years old. His mother, Margarita Brenner, was an Opera singer.

Brenner began his musical studies in Caracas at the “Colegio Emil Friedman” school, a prestigious institution heavily oriented toward musical education. When he was 12 years old he moved to Italy and then to Spain, where he became part of various music groups, such as “Brenner’s Folk”, “Los Pic-Nic” (featuring a female singer, Jeanette). At 21 years old, Vytas moved to Tennessee to study at the University of Tennessee’s Music Conservatory, where he was a pupil of David Van Vactor. Later, at college in Nashville, Vytas took post-graduate courses in Electronic music with Professor Gilbert Trythall[1], and graduated with honors in 1972. In 1971 he started a duo named “Vitas & Mafe” with Venezuelan singer María Fernanda Márquez.

In 1972 Brenner formed his own band, “La Ofrenda” (The Offering) and recorded 5 very successful LPs until 1979. With “Ofrenda” he started his pioneer work with compositions for combinations of electric and electronic instruments (synthesizers) with acoustic instruments and piano; and blending Progressive-Symphonic Rock, Latin rhythms, and Venezuelan traditional themes, with astounding results.

Brenner recorded several remarkable LPs, each one a breakthrough, as he was in fact developing a new genre in giant leaps. En 1982 a somewhat reunited “Ofrenda” performed at the “Teatro de Bellas Artes de Maracaibo”, but was coldly received by the public, followed by strong press criticism. In 1989 the Venezuela Symphony Orchestra performed his work “Oro Negro” (“Black Gold”) at the Caracas’ famed Teatro Teresa Carreño. In 1989 he released the CD album entitled “Amazonia”. He was commissioned to compose works for “Viajando con Polar”, a series of short documentaries about Venezuela’s regions, depicting their beautiful landscapes and rich folklore. He created music for various films, such as “Adiós Alicia”, “Se llamaba SN”, and playwright Román Chalbaud’s “Carmen la que contaba 16 años”. All the while, Brenner was a very successful studio musician, composing and performing in countless radio jingles, TV commercials and presidential campaigns. At the international level, his old and rare vinyl records sell for between U.S. $70 to $220.

Brenner died March 18, 2004 of a heart attack in Salzburg, Austria at the age of 57, while recording music for an upcoming CD.
